Aretha Louise Franklin, ‘Queen of Soul’, Dies Aged 76

Aretha Franklin, the “queen of soul” known for hits like Respect and Think, has died in Detroit at the age of 76. The legendary singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and announced last year she was retiring from music. Franklin had more than 20 US number ones over a career spanning seven decades. She gave her final performance last November at a gala in New York held in aid of the Elton John Aids Foundation. In a statement, her family said: “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. “We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins knew no bounds.” The family also confirmed her death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type. Born in Memphis to a gospel singer/pianist and a celebrated Baptist preacher, Franklin was tutored from an early age by such gospel stars as Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward. She struggled to find fame in the early years, with record label Columbia unsure how to frame her impressively powerful voice. Sir Elton John led the tributes on his Instagram account, writing: “The loss of Aretha Franklin is a blow for everybody who loves real music. • Herdsmen’s attacks: Why South-West must convene security summit —Aare Gani Adams

We don’t politicise things when it is in the right direction. We have to learn from those people that have built their democracies for many years like US, Britain and continues in the European Union. If the president signs a proclamation that is in the interest of their country, the democrats will not go against that proclamation. The Americans who are democrats will not take Donald Trump to court. They will applaud it, even though it was for the popularity of Trump. But we use sentiments to destroy anything in Nigeria. I have been on these issues of sentiments within the polity. This man has done the right thing now, let’s hail him and applaud him. After a week, you may go back to play your politics again. ...

  • Herdsmen attacks: They’re not interested in grazing but to conquer — Traditional ruler

By now everyone in Nigeria should now know that the Fulani have agenda and the agenda is to conquer and not to graze. The law forbidden open grazing of livestock has been in existence a long time ago, even before Benue and Taraba. But it is unfortunate that the law was not being implemented. They have an agenda. If you trace their history, you will see that what they are doing now is to revive the agenda. They started it in 1804 and conquered the North. And everywhere they conquered, they installed an emir and the emirs are of Fulani extraction, except in the Christian dominated areas which they want to conquer now. They started the new plan of conquest in Tiv land in 2004, when they requested that they should be allowed to have Adoo in Tiv land and should also be allowed to sit in the Tiv Traditional Council. It was then they also started asking for land to build mosques in Tiv land, but they were resisted because we knew it was another tactical way of relaunching the 1804 Jihad which we stopped in Tiv land here. ...

  • Tinubu, Oshiomhole Unfit To Talk About Corruption In PDP –Amori

Senator Ighoyota Amori is the Political Adviser to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus. In this interview with TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI, he speaks on the controversial statement made by President Muhammadu Buhari on Nigerian youths, alleged looters list and other issues. Excerpts: What is your take on this statement made by President Buhari that a lot of Nigerian youths are doing nothing while waiting for the government to provide basic amenities for them? It is an unfortunate statement by the president. Though Nigerians are not surprise because each time Mr. President travelled out of the country the expectation is that he will aspersions on the country through demarketing utterances. Nigerian youths are not lazy. It is the president that is lazy in solving the problems of this country three years after coming to power. Your party recently apologised to Nigerians but Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at his 10th annual Colloquium said Nigerians should not accept the apology offered by your party. He also said PDP will never come back to power. What is your take on that? I believe that the apology from the national chairman of PDP is the right thing to do. Even the Holy Bible recognizes the fact that to err is human and to forgive is divine. There was no way a government of P DP which presided over the affairs of this country for 16 years couldn’t have erred in one way or the other. We seized the period of the Easter celebration to atone for our sins and tell Nigerians that ‘for 16 years, you gave us your mandate to govern this country. Along the ...

Then the bubbles burst. Ayinla accused Baiyewunmi of fraudulent accounting. Nuhu Ribadu must be in elementary school at the time. There was no EFCC to report him to. Baiyewunmi was summarily summoned to Itoko in Abeokuta by the Emperor of Music. Perhaps scared of Ayinla’s fiery tongue (or afraid of the famed Magic Ring), Baiyewunmi, the embattled band manager refused to appear in court to show cause. ...
